Default RE: If not scent-lok then....

I'm also one who thinks that scent lok is a complete waste of money. I"m not even convinced that careful washing with baking soda and so-called "common sense" preparation is worth much. I've been bowhunting big game for 35 years and have never had a scent lok anything on. Until a coule years ago, I hadn't even tried washing in baking soda or any other meticulous scent control tactic. In that time I've had deer within a couple feet of me (downwind), deer that circled me, yet didn't show any recognition that I was there, even a deer directed under my stand, smelling an apple core I had just dropped. Do I think they couldn't smell me? Not for a second. However, for whatever reason there are times when deer are not that spooked by human scent. If a deer hasn't been pressured, it can be a fairly relaxed critter around humans.

I've worked with hounds all my life and I've found that under some conditions it's very difficult for the hounds to smell what they normally would detect instantly. I'm positive these same conditions apply to deer. Sometimes a deer that hasn't been pressured gets a faint whiff of a human (because of poor scenting conditions) and doesn't react. Many will attribute this to the scent lok clothing they are wearing, but in my opinion you might just a well give credit to the baloney sandwich you ate last year. Either makes just as much scents (sense).
