I bought a Browning Medallion in 300 WSM last summer. The rifle shoots very well and the recoil isn't severe. Recoil will depend largely on rifle weight as Stubblejumper posted. The Mdl 70 will likely be somewhat heavier than my A-bolt so recoil should be less. If you have been shooting a 12 gauge with slugs, the recoil of a 300 WSM shouldn't feel any worse. IMO it is a great caliber for deer and elk and other similar sized game.
