RE: 9mm vs. .40 S&W
Canadian hunter, the 50cal isn't for everyone. I got to shoot one last week and will tell you its a handful. For me when picking out a self defense gun, I just don't look at the knockdown alone. Several factors come into play. Like wieght, convience, ammo price for practice, overall size for grabbing real quick. Recoil, I mean if you scared of the gun, you would be better off not firing at all. You need to be very comforable with the guns wieght and grips and for it to be worthwhile to have as a self defence gun, grabbing it should be second nature. That requires alot of practice. The 50 cal S&W just doesn't fit that bill for 90% or more of the public. It really depends on the person. I mean my girlfirend has no purpose hanging on my 44Mag for defense. She is very comforatable with a 38Special +P. Her confidense and fimiluaraity with the gun is priceless. I do feel confident with a 10mm or a 45ACP. I can work the action quickly, and it is second nature for me to work my 1911, so when I wake up groggy, I don't have to think much before being able to protect myself.
I hear people on these pages make alot of blanket statements. Like a 45ACP is better, or this or that is better. Maybe for them, but not for all. Depends on the purpose.
