Hi Ruger-Redhawk,
I don't believe the XD comes in .45ACP yet. However if Glock releases the .45GAP for general use (non-proprietary....and I don't know if it is or isn't?!?) the XD could be chambered in .45GAP with no other modifications. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that a .45ACP version is already in the works. (Though with Springfield's other model .45's maybe not!)
Personally I like the XD and have a 4" chambered in .40S&W. But I also like the .45ACP and have a ParaOrdnance P-12. So I guess I have both covered
! Also currently looking at another 1911.....though I haven't exactly made up my mind about the manufacturer or length! Or for that matter blue or stainless. Maybe I'll have to get several
!

I've got a question related to this topic that I just have to ask...
From all the reading I've done here it seems that the XD pistols have a great following among the folks here, and many of the magazine writers also are singing its praises (I usually take them with a grain of salt, as a 5-star review CAN be the result of a large advertizing contract). Is this because they are relatively inexpensive compared to other semi-auto pistols, or are they really just that good, or both?

I don't know about the XD or any of the Springfields for that matter.Glock does have a Compact 45 ACP and now the 45GAP I have a Sig P-245 and it's one fine gun.I haven't shot it much but so far seems to be very reliable. It's a shorter version,I guess it's considered a Compact.. You do have to hang on to in but the recoil is manageable. For some it might be to much recoil. For those the 40 S&W fits the ticket.

I had heard and read good things about the XD. But hadn't given it any more notice than any other new guns that come out. My brother-in-law bought a 4" XD in .40 S&W and a number of us, (including several women), collectively put about 400-500 rounds through it the first day out. His wife liked it so well she made him get her a 4" XD in 9mm for her house gun. (She didn't care much for her KelTec P11 (9X19) because of its recoil.) The next time we went out we again collectively put several hundred rounds through each of them! Both the .40S&W and the 9X19. There were two or maybe three stoppages in the grand total of shots, (same two shooters), and once we explained to those shooters to not "limp wrist" the grip on the pistol.....we had no more malfunctions.
A very short period of time of go I picked up a 4" XD in .40S&W, (couldn't help myself
)! One thing I had noticed shooting both of my brother-in-laws, and mine since, is that the XD points very naturally for me. Additionally mine during the first several hundreds of rounds I have already fired has exhibited a tendency for very good accuracy from a combat pistol. Recoil is easily controlled in the XD, follow-up shots are smooth and quick, it has NOT malfunctioned once...with either magazine, and it points well, and carry's well in a FIST ultra thin Kydex IWB.Only time and continued shooting will answer the question as to its extended durability and reliability! But in a nutshell.....I like it quite a bit!

how much more knowdown power does the 10mm have over the 9mm?
if ya want one for defense just get one of those .50 cal handguns....i hear they have quite a bit of knockdown power.

Canadian hunter, the 50cal isn't for everyone. I got to shoot one last week and will tell you its a handful. For me when picking out a self defense gun, I just don't look at the knockdown alone. Several factors come into play. Like wieght, convience, ammo price for practice, overall size for grabbing real quick. Recoil, I mean if you scared of the gun, you would be better off not firing at all. You need to be very comforable with the guns wieght and grips and for it to be worthwhile to have as a self defence gun, grabbing it should be second nature. That requires alot of practice. The 50 cal S&W just doesn't fit that bill for 90% or more of the public. It really depends on the person. I mean my girlfirend has no purpose hanging on my 44Mag for defense. She is very comforatable with a 38Special +P. Her confidense and fimiluaraity with the gun is priceless. I do feel confident with a 10mm or a 45ACP. I can work the action quickly, and it is second nature for me to work my 1911, so when I wake up groggy, I don't have to think much before being able to protect myself.
I hear people on these pages make alot of blanket statements. Like a 45ACP is better, or this or that is better. Maybe for them, but not for all. Depends on the purpose.

Canadian Hunter did you mean 10mm or 40 s&w. Because a 10 MM has almost the same knock down power of a 41 magnum. The 10mm is probally the most powerful AUTO on the market except for the 50 AE and a few weird wildcats. They are a very violent round, much more recoil than a 45 acp. The 40 s&w is a cut down 10mm case with a small pistol primer. The 40s&w is a nice round, and is easily controled. Recoil is not much more than a 9mm but a lot less than a 45 or 10mm.
