RE: Ran into Chuck Adams today
So, how many outfitters that have guided anybody to a world record head, or a top 10 head, or a top 50 head (whatever) try to hide this fact? Other than Adams' honcho.
First, I'd like to disavow jealousy, as some nimrod here accused me. I'll reserve my jealousy for somebody I've got a shot to beat, obviously Adams is in another universe from me as a bowhunter.
Second, I'm not selling out to any accusations. But, I do think the details are awfully strange. Maybe his guide was the one guide in 1,000 who would want to conceal his involvement in a world record. Maybe the banning of game farms was just a fluke coincidence with the sudden emergence of MT bulls at the top ranks of the bow records. Maybe MT bulls suddenly jumped onto a whole new realm genetically. Maybe.
Finally, it's simply not true that Chuck Adams is universally revered in his field. I know Craig Boddington thinks he's a bum, for starters.
Anyhow, does anyone know how many world records, and for which species Adams holds? It's always been my impression, granting that I may well be wrong, that some of his world records are animals from other continents that can only be "hunted" in canned settings inside fences. Again, I could well be totally wrong on this point, but if not it would really speak back to the elk question with the banning of the game farms.
I just ran into an interview of Adams back in '88, and I really tried to read it with an open mind, to get a feel for what the guy is about. He sounds alright until he's talking about this sheep hunt he was on, where he was defending taking a long shot on a ram. Now I'm sure Chuck Adams can make longer shots than I can, that's not my beef. But he said something on these lines, "What am I supposed to do? Pass up a marginal shot and jeopardize my whole hunt?" I'm paraphrasing 'cause I don't have the magazine on hand, but the statement really reinforces my negative opinion of the man. He's so caught up in his pursuit, that he views passing up a questionable shot as ruining his hunt. That attitude is not welcome in my hunting camp, I'll say that.
