When we microchipped our frst dog, the vet did it without anesthesia. That poor girl let out a screem like I never heard before. Since then, we always tell the vet to use a local anesthetic before the "Big One".
BTW, we always have our litters chipped before they go to their new owners, as part of the cost of the puppy.
