Bobby,
Perhaps you should not be so dogmatic about your girlfriend's rifle selection.

Let me tell you a story. My wife hunted for years and killed many whitetails with her Marlin .30-30. She has also used my .270 and .30-06 and killed deer with both. Last year she decided that she wanted a new rifle. When I asked what caliber, she said ".270." She had made up her mind, and I did not interfere. She found a very nice .270 Rem 700 BDL. She loves this gun, and shoots it like a house afire. This accurate shooting is very important, since accuracy begets confidence. which begets accuracy, which... you get the point.

[I have hunted over much of the US during the past 49 years, and have killed whitetails, mule deer, elk and antelope with both calibers. I give a slight nod to the .30-06, but there is nothing (except possibly a grizzly) that walks in the lower 48 that cannot be dispatched quite handily with a .270.]
Keyshunter, your missing my point , I too have been bowhunting since '69, so I 've been to a couple bar-b-ques also, I am not knocking yours or anyone elses 270, if you like it then keep it. What my point was is that my girlfriend doesn't know the diff between a 270, 30-06, 7 mag or even a 25-06, but she wants one that sounds cool, being dogmatic as I am I told her to prove to me why she wants the 7 mag, she can't explain as she only relies on me for imput and she knows I favor the 30-06. There is no need going out there with her and shooting mixed cartriages for what reason when the 30-06 will drop anything around here as you mentioned including grizzlies, in which an encounter is possible here. We both put in for the moose tags and hunt elk and maybe an occasional bear if it becomes a problem here around the kabin, I want something thats going to do the job without having to go to the mags and the 30-06 has had a pretty good resume for me. To each their own.
Like I said before, I never had a 270 but I hear common responses like those that come from a lot of folks like snowball57 and Briman that will agree. If I am allowed one or the other and your out west hunting I would choose the 30-06.
Good luck, dogmatic Bobby
