The Whole State.....
of Michigan is loaded with black squirrels, which are the black phase of the eastern grey. It's called melanism, It's the black mutation form of a normal animal, which is the opposite of albinoism. And to tell you the truth I think we have more black eastern grey than the normal grey's. There everywhere now. I hunt an island in Lake Michigan, called beaver Island, and you could shoot anywhere from 50 to 100 squirrels a day and they would all be black ones. But since the bag limit is only 5 a day thats what we take. There is also black rabbits on the island. But those are from an old man that use to raise them for food. He died and the rabbits all escaped. Now they have bred and returned back to the wild. I'm 52 now and have never seen an albino squirrel alive. and I've hunted since I was 12, which I've hunted for 40 yrs. So I really envy those that have seen an albino squirrel.
