I agree with txBrian.
My pup was crated and still is when we aren't home. It was a little painful at first. I felt sorry for the lttle guy but It made house training pretty easy and the dog gets used to being in his kennel. They pretty much sleep all day anyway. I make sure I go home at lunch and let him out for a while. When he was younger he got fed at lunch as well. Try not to leave the dog in the crate for longer than 4-5 hrs at a time.
When you are home, take the pup out atleast once every hour or so and give it a command like "get busy" or something. Pretty soon he or she will start to get the hang of it.
