Default RE: Good bullet for 45/70

Garrett are the first loads I will try after we get to Alaska. Looking for a good shooting load for a "packing gun"......the 1895GS. Either the 420+P's Hammerheads or possibly the 540 grain Hammerheads. The carbine will be equipped with a Ghostring rear apperature and a partridge type front. And carried as the second rifle between my wife and I. It will also share duties as a camp gun with an 870 loaded with Brenneke slugs.

I don't know if I'd bother with the expense of these loads for whitetail deer hunting though. Any cast or expanding soft point has more than enough "energy" for deer hunting. Plus 338 will probably find these bullets expand even less in an animal like deer. The hammerhead loads do absolutely transfer plenty of shock to the animal....but they really should work better on game larger than whitetails. There is no doubt that they would kill deer....but they certainly aren't needed for deer. But a very good load!
