Measure the flash hole of your plug. If its .035 or larger its time for a new plug. Your flash CHANNEL needs to be cleaned with a 1/8th drill bit. Any other method is pretty much a waste of time trying to get out hard carbon. As flash channel volume decreases, pressure that reaches the primer increases.
I was cleaning my ML last night and noticed that the flash channel had a ring of carbon that was making the hole half its size. I was not seeing any accuracy or ignition issues. Actually just took a doe this weekend with it. I used a drill bit by hand and got it all cleaned out. Based on your last sentence above, this is probably why my primers were getting hard to remove.
