If the scope is 'good', the image of the reticle, and the image of the target, are both in the same place; 'out there'. When one is focused on one or the other, one is focused on the other too. This is why scopes work good for old folks, that cannot focus close, that cannot focus on the front iron sight.
What i do is focus on both the target, and the cross hair simultaneously, because i can, because they are in the same place.
