A bigger cartridge does not make up for poor bullet placement. No way it should take 5 rounds of .303 to kill a bear. Practice with your .270 and you won't have a problem.
And for the record, I don't much care for the killing part of hunting. But it's the only way to harvest game, and I enjoy eating them.
