never seen bears use saplings, they tend to use larger tree's and scratch up high to
they will use smaller tree's to scratch themselves, but
my guess might be a porcupine , they will eat bark off tree's?

He didn't say they were saplings. He said sap was still running from the rubs. It could have been a stag that lost his goodies and will never lose his rack, but my guess is still that it was a bear.
