I agree with Top, the deer was not in a good position for a shot and the arrow didn't penetrate very far. He was lucky.
Pentetrated to the other side of the deer and it was sticking out...how much farther ya want it to go?
Deer is dead, and pretty quick too so obviously it wasn't a bad shot.
