I have no idea why you are minimizing stupidity. It doesn't matter if you can blow up a muzzle loader with black powder, If you do not load it properly, too much powder, an air space between the powder and the projectile etc. There is no way to load that particular rifle properly with smokeless powder, it wasn't made for that. This incident was through stupidity or carelessness. If you use something contrary to the intended use, unintended consequences are probable. The manufacturers tell you quite clearly not to use smokeless powder in their produce if it was not meant for smokeless powder. As far as your statement," Some smokeless powders create less pressure then current black powder substitutes when used properly", there is no proper way to use smokeless powder in a black powder or black powder substitute gun.
