It doesn't matter if you can blow up a muzzle loader with black powder, If you do not load it properly, too much powder, an air space between the powder and the projectile etc. There is no way to load that particular rifle properly with smokeless powder, it wasn't made for that. This incident was through stupidity or carelessness. If you use something contrary to the intended use, unintended consequences are probable. The manufacturers tell you quite clearly not to use smokeless powder in their produce if it was not meant for smokeless powder.
