Some bucks are nearly impossible to kill. Usually the only times you can kill these kind of bucks are in the rut when they may be trailing a doe.
I agee... this is the best way to hunt him... Sit from light to dark and make adjustments as you see him as far stand location. Obviously grunting gets him to his feet and sounds as though he responds well to it.
