I'm a big Remington fan, but I know alot of folks aren't overly thrilled with recent models. Any of the older models are money, imo.

I've been looking too... Savage seems to be real solid, also the Vanguard, and Howa are on my list right now too. Depending on the model gun you choose, you can get set up with a VERY nice scope within your budget, imo. I just recommend staying away from real low end model guns, regardless of maker.
