When i lived in NY that was the case but i now live in TN and 7mm08 is common here,even the big box store seem to stock it. But it is more expensive.
I personally like my 243...PLENTY for deer.
Any decent gun shop carries 7-08 in a variety of bullet weights. So getting ammo would not even be a consideration.
