RE: Great Moose Hunt Again
Hey MachZ,
Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines but when I grunt, I try to sound like a younger bull and try not to sound too deep. I' m sure this was a pretty big bull. I think part of the problem may have been that he was on the other side of some very thick willows along a creek and we were in a canoe backed up against the far bank. He may not have wanted to go through that thick crap and across the creek.
You never know though. It was fun anyway.
We ended up going back up there on the last day of the season, more to look around that area for next year than anything else and found a great spot back in where we figure he came from. It' s a bit of a ridge between two flooded out areas that was completly torn up and thrashed. There were trails running along the ridge and a few rut pits that stunk like you wouldn' t believe. Moose crap every where. When we found it we just stood there going. " Look at that, look at that, holy crap look over there" . It' s one of those spots that when you find, you just know is a honey hole.
It' s nasty to get in to. You have to wade thigh deep through about a hundred yards of flooded timber and loon s**t but once you are in there it is nice solid ground. It' s the best looking spot I' ve ever seen. A natural funnel between two sloughs with a small willowy meadow. Awesome!
Won' t be easy getting one out, but totally doable. There is a beaver channnel running about half way in there that we could float a canoe up.
I can' t wait for next year.
