As much as i'd like to see Remington start chambering the 6.5x284, i think the reason they don't is do to the fact that it eats barrels.
Guys that use them for 1000yd competition are saying that they get a 1000 rounds before the accuracy goes away, and if they have a two turn set back done they can get 500 more rounds out of the barrel.
The 260 is within 150fps or less to the 6.5x284 if you compare them using hodgdon data:
260 Rem; 120 GR. SPR SP Hodgdon H414 .264" 2.780" 42.5grs 2802fps to 45.5grs 2968fps
6.5x284; 120 GR. SFT SP Hodgdon Hybrid 100V .264" 2.780" 46.0grs 2739fps to 50.0grs 2979fps
