Did a Russian over to 30-40 years ago. Made a new bolt head so the rim of the case fit in the bolt face and extractor worked. If I remember right I made a wider ejector also. I used an 0'3 Springfield barrel. It functioned fine, shot good enough but not great. It was really not worth the effort put in. You would really, really have to like them to waste time on one. Take a brush on a drill and go after the original barrel with bore cleaner just to make sure the bullet is not restricted. I have done this with ***anese Island guns with really bad looking bores and some turned out to be excellent shooters. I have hunted with them and killed deer with them, but that was mostly when I was a kid and a Russian rifle was so cheap that a box of ammo for the rifle cost more than the gun. If you want to build a gun for hunting, start with a Mauser or Arisaka.
