The auto safety engages when you close ( maybe on openning)the gun.The safety will be in the on position automatically and you have to take it off to fire. Not sure how they do it. I was thinking maybe they did away with the auto safety. I got mine when they first came out in the late 70's early 80's. It will be easy to check by openning and closing the gun. Ruger Redhawk
