I hunt public land 99.9% of the time. But when I did hunt private land I made it a point not to only show up at hunting season. I would drop by several times a year. Ask if he needed any help or just jump in - even a simple gesture of hooking up a trailer to the tractor so he doesn't have to jump off goes a long way. Dropping off some venison steaks or cleaned pheasants. Maybe even some candy for his kids. Send him a Christmas card with a note thanking him for allowing me to hunt. All this translates into your permission to hunt his property even if no one else can.
