I had 3 M77s, all early tang safety models... One was a real lemon...It was chambered in 7 x 57 and shot patterns rather than groups... I learned after I peddled it that many of the 77s in that chambering were long throated and accuracy could be improved by seating the bullets WAY out in the case, but I was a neophyte handloader at the time and did not know enough to try that...

After that, I had a 25-06 and a .338 WM and both were exceptionally accurate...

Several of my friends hunt with Ruger 77s and all of them are very accurate..

I wouldn't be afraid of buying a Ruger...With that one exception all I have had contact delivered excellent hunting accuracy...

I have a M70 in .280 Rem , which is one of my favorite hunting rifles..While it delivers acceptable hunting accuracy, it is no tack driver.. I had to work to find a load that would consistently group around 1.5" at 100 yards... My buddy has a M70 featherweight in .270, and it is the same way...Groups well enough to hunt with, but not to brag about...

Good luck....
