I can imagine a bad situation where I wound a deer, have a chance to put the animal down, but cannot because I have to take the time to swab the barrel.

Well I dont want to be rude either, but who Swabs between shots in the field while there Hunting? I never have nor do I know anyone that ever has.
I never ever ever had a hard time getting a second round down a Barrel after my First shot. It's a-lot different at the range when your sighting in or just shooting your MLer, then yes swab between shots or everyother, but if you have to swab a bore in the field to get a second shot off then YES that's Crazy.
So I guess then Im no help to you, except to suggest you try a different Powder if your having that much of a hard time.
