One thing about dialing the scope, is if you are using a cheap scope, that often don't move exactly the amount they claim they should, and ontop of that they aren't repeatable. So I'd play around at the range and make sure your scope is moving where it should, and also see where you need to move it, before you start trying to dial in for longer ranges.
