1) After installing an SD card and completing the setup, do not forget to push the slide button to the top. Leaving the slide button in setup will result in: no pictures, dead batteries within a day or less. This is where the rechargeables come in. Taking a few more seconds before leaving may save the day as well as a few bucks.
2) Jarring the camera while it is taking a video, either human error or an animal messing with it will result in: shortened video time as compared to set time for that particular video, and an off color or going full red.
I used this camera as an example because these things have happened to me, and this brand and model is what I have been using.
