The 410 slug will kill deer reliably if you hunt with it like you would a bow. SHORT range and broadside shots. I consider it a serious handicap when compared to muzzleloaders or 12 and 20 Ga shotguns.

I hunt with a 12 ga Marlin 512 Slugmaster and shoot Brenneke 2.75" KO Sabot slugs. The recoil is noticeable but nothing drastic. I don't even feel it when shooting deer, and in general, slug guns are not the ones you shoot a lot at the range. I fire less than 5 shots a year with mine, a couple to check zero and one or two at deer.

I'd find a 12 or 20 Ga gun and shoot 2.75" slugs, or even reduced recoil slugs before I would ever consider a 410. Then theres the muzzleloader option.
