Pick quality over quantity. It will be hard to find a higher magnification scope in that price range that is of good quality, unless you luck up on something used. You will be better off to save another $100-$150 and buy yourself a good scope to start with.

You don't state what type of hunting or where you hunt so I will assume you are talking about deer. A good quality 3-9x40 is a good range to start with. Some would say that most hunters do not need even that much magnification.

Right now you can get a Bushnell Elite 4200 for around $250. Amazon had them the other day for $240 shipped but they are now a little more. Never ordered from this company before but it looks to be a good deal.
