I use Limbsavers on my Excal and find that they do indeed dampen the noise. I put one on each side of the rail near the end and one on the inside of each limb near the end where they just touch the string. On a compound crossbow I don't know about placing them on the inside of the limbs.
You will NEVER get a crossbow very quiet.
