In Indiana, you can also hunt deer with certain rifles. The gun must be chambered for a cartridge whose case is not longer than 1.625". Cases do not have to be straight-walled. In fact several guys are making 35 cal wildcats based on cases like the 270 WSSM. As far as over the counter goes, you can use any rifle chambered for typical pistol rounds such as 357 Mag, 44 Mag and quite a few others, even 500 S&W I think.
A good shooting 44 mag with handloads or leverevolution ammo would get you 175 yds. Something to think about. But if you want a ML, that's a good way to go too. No need to change guns when ML season rolls around.
