I bought a range finder last year and was in the same situation. I chose not to get the angle compensator. I figured I was going to practice shooting from a tree stand, so the 20 yards I measured practicing would be the same distance I would see in the field.

Like others said, long distance or some extreme conditions on a mountain it would be to your advantage to buy the archers choice.
