RE: dial up sucks (venting)
I'm at a friends house now that has satellite internet. I've only had one other buddy that has had it and he didn't like it as he said they cut it back to dial up speeds if you downloaded more than they allowed in a day and if you kept downloading they cut it off for several hours.
Well, while I used his a tad bit not enough to pay attention.
Here my cell phone doesn't work well enough to use it for the net as they are out in the country and I get 1 bar then lose signal then one bar then lose it again.
So I'm on their satellite internet. I have to say it has felt a lot slower than my internet does on my phone. I just ran a speed test and got 318kbps download and 51kbps upload. While that's quite a bit faster than dial up it's quite a bit slower than the internet on my phone is as I often see between 700kbps to 1mbps. Sometimes I've seen higher and a few times lower but usually it's around those numbers. I don't think I've ever seen it this low.
Plus at $30 a month I'm sure it's a lot cheaper than satellite internet they have. I know it's cheaper than my other buddies as he cut his off as soon as his contract ended and starting using his phone for internet also. He really liked it other than you can't use your phone while using the internet on it.
I'm not sure if they have Hughes net or Wild Blue as I don't see it on the modem and haven't looked at the Dish.
It's not bad but no where near as fast as my phone and about 15-20x slower than the cable modem. Still not bad for surfing the net and since it's the only option besides dial up out here I think it's a good choice. I just think if you can use the net on your phone as in get good signal it's better.
I don't know what will happen when it gets fully switched to Verizon as they don't to my knowledge offer a unlimited data plan for tethering but for right now at least you could take advantage of that. Hopefully Verizon keeps it at least for a while.
