I agree with the folks who have said who gives a rats ass.That's their problem not yours! If you havn't done any thing wrong you have nothing to defend.You are recognizing that you are fortunate (with plenty of work on your part) to hunt where you hunt but you have put the effort in and you continue to do so.I wouldn't let it bother me in the least!
I personally believe the way you counter act that is just to live your life right,treating every one as you would wish to be treated.It is hard to be upset with genuinely decent people.
I have encountered this in business.I have worked very hard and have been very fortunate in taking part in the creation of a successful business.For most people it is easier to knock others than to put the effort in to bettering themselves.
Bottom line don't give it one second of thought!!
