I agree to a point. While yes “technically” you didn’t put yourself in the right position and then capitalize on the opportunity, you can still hunt the way you are supposed to and pick all the “right” stands and just not have fate give you that opportunity. When it comes down to guys who head into the season knowing they most likely will only have ONE chance at a good buck all year, they need a little luck on their side. I don’t think it’s an excuse so much as that’s just the way it is.

Now if you are blowing chances, spooking deer, not paying attention to details, not putting the time in the woods, then yea, there is only to look in the mirror. But if you have valid reasons for stand selection based on deer behavior, sign, knowledge and experience…play your wind directions, stay still on stand, take scent precautions and smart routes in and out, and STILL don’t get it done. You just had fate give you a raw deal. You can’t WILL a deer past your stand, you can only put yourself in the best position that you feel is available. After that, it’s up to the deer.
