That .17hmr will work, but keep them inside 100yrds, and inside 75yrd is probably best. I would also look into getting some sort of field rest like a bi-bod or possibly build your own, but I would definitely look into getting something so you can place shots right. If you don't place your shots you won't put down too many song dogs with that little round. Is the rifle a semi-auto? A double tap (two shots in rapid succession right next to each other.) would put them down much better.
