What yo witnessed is what the & mag is designed to do 3100 fps of pure hyrostatic devistation. It is really unneccasary to use a mag on whitetail. If you want to slow down try using a heavier bullet like a 160 gr or a 175 gr. They will hit the deer like a hammer but will be traveling under the 3000 fps mark.
