I friend of mine, who also likes to use trial timers, used a battery power travel alarm clock to softly turn on a talk radio station after dark. Turned the thing off when he returned to bait the barrel in the AM. After he rang the dinner bell at the barrel everything was quiet again during the day. I' m not really a gadget guy, but he said he did this for a couple nights and the bears never did hit the bait at night again. Then again, I' d of thought the flash off the trail camera would make a large bear head for a new bait station!
