The .58 is not as popular as you might think. Many claim the .54 is a better caliber. I am not one of them. My .58 caliber Green Mountain Barrel that fits my Renegade is one great shooting rifle.
The problem with the .58 is they take around 110 grains of powder for the hunting load, and the ball (unless you cast your own) is expensive to purchase. They only sell you 50 in a pack for about what you'd pay for 100 of the .54 caliber.
I had a friend that hunted for years with a .58 caliber and when he shot a deer, it just flopped over. 284 grain roundballs tend to expand and leave real large holes. What I would like is a .62 caliber rifled barrel. I have been thinking of getting a 1841 rifled musket in .69 caliber. I think that would be a lot of fun to own and shoot.
