I dont think the .17 are actually .177 i think they are actually smaller than that b/c pellet guns are .177 and you can't use their cleaning kits in a .17 rifle. I know my .17HMR is much more accurate than my .22lr and has a further reach. I purchased it for varmints and also for practice as its cheaper to practice with than my larger rifles.
Yes the 17HMR has a longer reach than the 22LR. But the 17HMR should not be compared to the 22LR. It should be compared to the 22Magnum. And when you compare the 17HMR to the 22Magnum!! Well the 22 magnum definitely has a longer range for "killing power". Tom.
