I would not worry about the density of the plants. You are raising forage which hopefully will be eaten regularly. The deer will eat the bulbs making room for the other plants to continue to develop.

There is not a lot of ground prep needed for rape. You can over seed with it, but do not expect a dense crop like the pics above. If you clear the ground to the bare soil, compact it slightly, seed and then drag lightly to cover you can plant a plot rather quick. Lime and fertilizer will help increase the food plot success.
