We're it me I'd go .243 or 7-08 in a 700 youth SPS.....
All the smack a kid will ever need for deer, in an easier to use short action rifle, with a LOT less recoil.
If your 12 year old is sized where an adult stock is stillhard to handle, then I'd be concerned over recoil issues.
Do your kid a favor and don't thump him wth a .270 until he is bigger............
