Default RE: Grunt Calling

I' ve grunted what you could call " blindly" I guess, and never brought anything in to speak of. If a buck is spotted though, they defintley do the trick. This past bow season I had a doe come browsing through and walked right under my tree. About 30 yards behind me I " thought" I saw a decent sized deer sneaking behind me, then I saw the very tip of a rack. Finally the doe walked in front of me behind a pine and I took out my " can" and tipped it with two long bleats and a short one, and immediatley followed it with two grunts. I didn' t even finish the last grunt and he started coming pretty fast. He stopped behind me and made a very small and quick scrape, then rubbed a tree a little and came a bit further and stood directly under me (...what a rush). A couple more yards and I had a small window to shoot through a pine and I hit him a bit high and dumped him in his tracks!!! Not a real big rack, but a 10 point with a little palmation and the hint of a few kickers...nice character.

During the rifle season in November on opening morning, I had a fairly young 8 point about 150+ yards out in a fresh cut sniffing around a doe. I figured I was going to pass him, but wasn' t sure so I gave two grunts....nothing. Gave him a good loud one and he locked up in his tracks...a couple short ones and he came running like he was on a rope. This guy keyed in on me and came through the clear cut and jumped a big fallen tree, breaking through ice, and trotting right towards me. I decided that I wasn' t going to take him when he stopped about 40 yards away looking back and forth....one real soft grunt and he ducked under a fallen tree and again broke through some ice and when he got about 15 yards he stopped and realized he was busted!!! He looked up to me and wheeled around and worked his was back to the doe he was originally " courting" .

Got a little long winded I guess, but the point is....grunt calls work!
