Its still infrared which projects light out to around 30-50 feet but where the projection comes from is little dim red lights.. Did you ever have a video camera that had night vision on it? the old sonys did..when you switched it on you could see about 15 feet ahead of you, but when you looked directly at the camera, you could see two dim red lights. They projected the IR. I know what you mean though.
