in some of my reading i've found that late season rubs are often bucks marking their territory as they begin returning to their home range after the rut. They want the other deer in the area to know that they've returned and that it is their terriroty so they make these late season rubs. Intuititvely, looking for sheds near the newest rubs obviously makes sense, but I'll let some of the other guys help ya more on that one
