Forgot to mention, but if it does clean up I'd come back here with some specifics (brand - model - style - caliber) and get some starting load recommendations.
For example, if it's a caplock .50 I'd probably start off with35-40 grains of ffg BP & a patched round ball.
Also, if it's acaplock be sure the nipple/threads are in good shape!!!!!
