Absolutely you got screwed. I wouldn't hunt with that guy anymore.
This year, my cousin helped track a wounded deer and also helped me drag two deer out of the woods (no more than a 15 minute drag both times). I paid to have the second deer processed and made into sausage and jerky.
I gave him ALL of the steak, burger, jerky and sausage from my second deer to show my appreciation, since he didn't get a deer this year.
