For deer and varmints, it is a crap shoot, but if you intend to hunt any larger game that might require more bullet weight, a 30-06 might be a better way to go.

I personally haven't found anything in North America that a 270 wouldn't kill.
Neither have I, and this includes three years living in Fairbanks, AK.
