I can toss, not throw, toss a rock and hit my ladder stand behind my house. I have a huge overgrown, swampy thicket area across the road from my backyard that has tracks and trails coming out of it and onto the road. Deer routinely walk by my dog, and even me, standing in the backyard and out onto the road. I don't think the wind direction matters so much within a hundred yards or so of my house because the smells are normal to the deer. But, when I stretch beyond that 100 or so I think they start to get a little leary.
